society in rural areas. It is economically important because of low capital investment,
high value addition, negligible import content and high potential for export earnings.
According to the provisional data available, export of handicrafts excluding hand knotted
carpets performed well during April-March '98-99. The export increased from Rs. 4353.18
crore in April- March '97-98 to Rs.5058.40 crores during the same period in April-March
'98-99 recording an increase of 16.20% in rupee terms. In Dollar terms export increase

| The
Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts is an apex body working under Ministry
of Textiles, Govt. of India for the promotion of the exports of handicrafts from the
country is planning to set up a Trade Mart at Greater Noida for the cottage sector viz.
handicrafts, handlooms, carpet and jute etc. India has a vast production base for
handicrafts (including carpets), handlooms, jute and other gift-ware. The growth in these
sector has been phenomenon in terms of employment and foreign exchange earnings. |
|
| The
opportunities for the international marketing of these products is not
adequately available to Indian manufacturers, exporters due to higher marketing cost
involved for introduction of new product in the foreign market and excessive high cost of
participation in an international fair abroad. It has also been observed that these events
give opportunity to only a handful of exporters who also have to spare substantial foreign
exchange. |
|
| In view
of the above constraints and to set up measures to provide quantum jump in the exports of
the cottage sector, Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts at the instance of Ministry
of Textiles, Govt. of India has planned to set India's 1st Trade Mart on the pattern of
Shanghai Mart and other International Mart. The entire trade mart have permanent contact
throughout the year reliable supply, quick turnover, capacity to absorb new technologies
and design and round the clock international marketing. |
|
| The Mart
will house Exposition Area Mart Area Resource Centre and latest IT facilities. The Council
has already conducted a pre-feasibility study of the proposed Trade Mart. A land of 25
